In Mac OS X, the root account is disabled by default. The first user account created is added to the admin group and that user can use the sudo command to execute other commands as root. Title: Open-source guru creates new ID system
Source: Techworld
Date Written: 2006-03-28
Date Collected: 2006-03-28
Jeremie Miller, developer of the Jabber instant messaging software, has launched MicroID to allow users to digitally sign their web content.
MicroID is designed to provide only limited functionality, and does not compete with full identity platforms, such as the Liberty Alliance project. MicroID may prove useful to search engines, such as Google or Technorati, to verify ownership of content, but could also serve in comment moderation systems and membership-based websites. MicroID, which Miller describes as a work in progress, would be built on a distributed system, so identity information will not be stored in a single central collection.

Title: Microsoft creates public bug database for IE
Source: C-Net News
Date Written: 2006-03-27
Date Collected: 2006-03-28
Microsoft has launched a public bug database for Internet Explorer 7, similar to the public databases used by open source projects. Al Billings, a member of the IE project team, says his team decided to deploy an open bug database after numerous customers requested reporting mechanisms like Bugzilla and the Firefox project's feedback system. The database is accessible to anyone with a Microsoft Passport account through Microsoft Connect. The database is intended only for IE 7 bugs, and will not cover bugs in earlier versions of the web browser.

Title: Vendor patches dangerous IE bug
Source: Techworld
Date Written: 2006-03-28
Date Collected: 2006-03-28
eEye Digital Security has released a temporary patch for the critical
createTextRange() flaw in Internet Explorer 6, as Microsoft says its official patch will wait until April 11, 2006. Hundreds of malicious websites are exploiting the flaw to execute arbitrary code on visitors'
machines. Microsoft describes these threats as "limited", but Stephen Toulouse, head of Microsoft's Security Response Center, says the company is "working day and night" on a patch. Microsoft may release the patch early if the threat continues to grow. However, eEye wanted to offer users some protection against the flaw in the two weeks before Microsoft's official patch release. Users can also protect themselves by disabling Active Scripting, though this may not be viable for all users.

Title: Second unofficial fix plugs IE hole
Source: C-Net News
Date Written: 2006-03-28
Date Collected: 2006-03-29
Determina, an intrusion-prevention company, has released an unofficial patch for the Microsoft Web browser. eEye Digital Security has also issued a “third-party patch”. Microsoft has not yet provided an update for the serious new flaw in how Internet Explorer handles the "createTextRange()" tag. However, the SANS Institute recommends that “only those people who need to use Active Scripting in IE should consider adopting an unofficial solution”. Microsoft's regular monthly patch, due out April 11, will fix the problem, and the company is considering making the release early.

New Bagel worm variants now incorporate rootkit functions, making them more difficult to detect. Panda Software reports that Bagle.HX, Bagle.HY and Bagle.HZ “attempt to download files from various Internet addresses, most being located in the .ru domain”, and that the worm then copies of itself and eventually downloads and runs keyloggers or other malicious programs.
